The Orphic Hymn to Dream is one of the last to appear in the sequence of Orphic Hymns. The final three hymns form an intriguing triptych: To Sleep (#85), To Dream (#86), To Death (#87). The Dream hymn presents the spirit of dreaming as a moral force - one who has the power to offer truthful messages from the gods, as well as actionable advice! Those who are righteous receive signs that they are on the right path and warnings when they stray. But the impious enter the battle of daily life without the benefit of premonition.
The Hymn to Oneiros is my form of nightly prayer. Since I began the practice some months ago, I've remembered portions of my dreams nearly every night. Sometimes they are self-evidently powerful; more often they seem banal at first glance. But I almost always find some useful message in them on later contemplation. I can't say I've received any grand apotropaic messages yet. A few days ago I dreamed that the heating lamp for our baby chicks went out and when I woke up, that turned out to be true. However, if that is the greatest calamity I have to face, and the greatest warning I have to receive, I will accept that gladly!
The Orphic Hymn to Dream has 18 lines. So for this video, I decided to feature the tarot card known as The Moon, which is traditionally numbered 18 or XVIII in the tarot's sequence of major arcana. I've assigned one Moon card to each line - thus, 18 Moon cards are featured here. They are:
